Fall 2021. Course: Jean Monnet Chair - Introduction to Mainland China Study

For achieving the goal of the project “EU-East Asia Industrial interactions,” it is necessary to understand the EU’s strategies but also East Asian (especially China’s) development.  This course is 36 hours in a semester for undergraduate students taking the Program of Mainland  China Study at NTU.  Half of the course will cover issues related to the EU-China relations, especially for the EU’s response to China’s  BRI, Made in China 2025, and even China Standardization 2035, have been an important point for China’s industrial upgrading, the  changes in East Asian supply chains, and the EU’s industrial policies.  It will cover the following topics:

1.      Theory of industrial policies for the advanced and emerging economies

2.      Diplomatic interaction between the EU and China since 2005

3.      China’s BRI the responses from other countries (The cases of the EU, 17+1, and Taiwan)

4.      From “Made in China 2025” to “China Standardization 2035”

5.      Origin of the EU’s FDI screening mechanism and China’s response

6.      Origin of the EU-level Industry policy: Will it work?

7.      EU-China relations and the impact on East Asia
